Becoming A God?

picture-136The Mormon Church (LDS) is not considered a Christian faith because of their view of God. Not just a disagreeable view but one that is totally non-scriptural and follows the same vein as what the serpent told Eve in the garden.

Genesis 3:4-5 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormons taught the following: “I will prove that the world is wrong, by showing what God is…God himself was once as we are now and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! That is the great secret…I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.345) “God himself…is a man like unto one of yourselves…God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth…You have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves” (Times and Seasons, val.5, pp.613-614) “Here then is eternal life—to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves…the same as all Gods have done before you…To inherit the same power, the same glory and the same exaltation until you arrive at the station of a God” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.346-347).

Brigham Young taught: “He (God)…was once a man in mortal flesh as we are, and is now an exalted being…It appears ridiculous to the world, under their darkened and erroneous traditions, that God was once been a finite being” (Journal of Discourses, vol.7, p.333) “The Lord created you and me for the purpose of becoming Gods like himself.” (Journal of Discourses, vol.3, p.93).

According to an interview by Richard Ostling for Time magazine, “President Gordon Hinckley says that concept of God having been a man is not stressed any longer, but he [Hinckley] does believe that human beings can become gods in the afterlife.”

The problem is that none of this can be argued by scripture. Rather, scripture teaches just the opposite:

  • Numbers 23:19 “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent…”
  • Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
  • Psalm 93:2 Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.
  • Hosea 11:9 “…For I am God, and not man…”
  • Malachi 3:6 For I am the Lord, I do not change…

Mormons sometimes will refer to passages in scripture that speak of God “repenting” as evidence that He changes. The problem is that these scriptures are evidence of the change of His actions but not of His nature.

Therefore, according to scripture, God was never man nor will we be a god one day. If we attempt to change scripture then it’s foundation crumbles. It is no longer reliable. For, who can trust a God spoken truth if it changes.
