Who Is Jesus? An Unpopular Truth

2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.

The King James translated this verse to say “by the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” The difference is that the Jehovah’s Witness will use the KJV to prove that Peter is speaking of two different identities, rather than calling Jesus God.

In the Greek it does literally say  “of God our and Savior Jesus Christ” (too The-oo hemone kai Soatheros I-asus Christoo).

To better understand this verse let’s take a look at verse 11 – “For so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In the Greek it literally says ” of Lord our and Savior Jesus Christ” (too Kuri-oo hemone kai Saotheros I-asus Christo0).

The only difference in the two is in one verse Peter uses God and the other he uses Lord. Grammatically translating into English is not always as simple as word for word in the same order. The same is true in translating other languages such as Spanish into English.

The preposition “of” (too) brings both God and Savior together in verse 1 as well as Lord and Savior together in verse 11. Peter is literally referring to Jesus as God in verse 1.

But, in verse 2 Peter changes it up and actually does refer to God the Father and Jesus our Lord. “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.”

In the Greek it literally reads “of God and Jesus of Lord our” (too The-oo kai I-asus too kuri-oo hemone).

Notice the “of” (too) for both? Each has their own preposition.

So, what does Peter believe about Jesus? He believes the same as what Thomas did in John 20:28 “My Lord and my God!”

Do not allow anyone to tell you that Jesus was just a man or just a prophet or another God among many gods. Jesus is God just as much as the Father and the Holy Spirit is God.

I will not say that the King James translated it wrong but the way it is translated it could be used as an argument either way. But, in the original there is no argument.

Why is it so important to understand the divinity of Jesus Christ? We are living in a time that many are teaching that all religions worship the same God but by a different name. I can argue against that point but let’s keep one thing clear – Jesus Himself said that there was no other way to get to the Father except through Him.

I saw a survey recently that said that over 40% of Christians believe that all religions worship the same God. We have to study the Word of God or there will be many who think that they know what is right and will be dead wrong. Eternity is at risk.

  • The Mormons teach that Jesus and Satan are brothers and that one day they will become a god as Jesus did.
  • The Jehovah’s Witness teach that Jesus is just another god.
  • Islam teaches that Jesus will return but will be submissive to Mohammed’s teachings.

It is very important to know your Bible and know the God of the Word. If Jesus does not return soon it may be illegal for me to write such things. This teaching is what got many Christians killed in Rome in the early centuries. History has a way of repeating itself.

Salvation Through Joseph Who?

picture-191From the standpoint of many the very simple means of salvation is elitist. They feel that the simple message of Jesus is unfair because it offers only one way to God. According to scripture salvation is through Jesus Christ. Simple? It should be and yet many want to find other doors.

  • John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
  • Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
  • 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.

But this is not what the Mormon church teaches (LDS). Take a look at the following and discover their idea of salvation:

  • “This church…only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth” (Doctrine and Covenants, 1:30)
  • Apostle Bruce McConkie states: “There is no salvation outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (Mormon Doctrine, p.670).
  • Marion Romney said, “This Church is the ensign on the mountain spoken of by the Old Testament prophets. It is the way, the truth, and the life” (Conference Report, April, 1961, p.119).
  • Mormon president and prophet Brigham Young declared: “he that confesseth not that Jesus has come in the flesh and sent Joseph Smith with the fullness of the Gospel to this generation, is not of God, but anti-christ” (Journal of Discourses, vol.9, p312).
  • (There is) “no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith” (Joseph Fielding Smith, in Doctrines of Salvation, vol.1, p.190).
  • “No man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith” (Brigham Young, in Journal of Discourses, vol.7, p.289).
  • Bruce McConkie states: “If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation” (Mormon Doctrine, p.670).
  • Brigham Young stated: “Every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are” (Journal of Discourses. vol.7, p.289).

Either Jesus was right or He was wrong. If He was wrong then that why is scripture so incorrect. If scripture is incorrect then it is a free-for-all on what truth really is. Could I not start a teaching that says that only those who eat at KFC will enter heaven? Come on!

Do not fall for the story lines of anyone who has a teaching that is contrary to what the Bible says! The message is simple; it is through Jesus Christ and Him alone!

Is Jesus God?

images4John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

There are not many who will disagree that John was writing about Jesus, referring to Him as the Word. But, there is a group of people who will disagree with the translation. According to the Jehovah’s Witness and their translation, it should read “and the Word was a god.”

It is upon their translation of this verse that they have established that Jesus was one of many gods, of which they can be too.

This may go a little deep, but hold on. It works.

I received a paper from a Jehovah’s Witness which gave other bible translations which I had never heard of who translated “a god” in John 1:1. The authors of Should You Believe in the Trinity? on page 28 explained that in the Greek, given the grammatical circumstance, the translator has the freedom to use the article “a” if they feel that it fits with Theos (the greek word for God), even when the article “a” is not written.

Therefore, by their own argument, this verse can not be used to prove whether Jesus was God or a god.  It’s up to the translators!

What about John 1:18 where the sentence begins with Theos with no definite article, just like John 1:1.  Why did your translators choose to change their rules?

If they translate “a god” in John 1:1 why did they not translate it the same way in John 1:6 or John 1:12 or John 1:13?  Not only are these verses in the same book, written by the same author, but they are also in the same chapter.  Should we pick-and-choose with God’s Word which rule we use?

Again, let’s see how scripture explains itself. In John 20:28 Thomas makes this declaration, “My Lord and My God!”

Here is where it gets really crazy. Although most of the New Testament was written in Greek with the word Theos used for God, the Jehovah’s Witnesses have gone through and picked out which ones they want to translate as Jehovah and which ones they translate as god. Of course it was John 1:1 and John 20:288 they chose not to translate the word Theos as Jehovah. Something screwy going on here!

In Isaiah 9:6, a verse which most every accepts is about Jesus, He is called the “Mighty God”.  The answer they gave me is that this is not Jehovah, just a god.  But what about Jeremiah 32:8 where Jehovah is also called the “Might God”?  If both Jesus and Jehovah are “Mighty God” what separates them?

And, I can not forget about Matthew 1:23 which says “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” This is a quote from Isaiah 7:14. Immanuel does not mean “a god with us.”

Let’s stay in the Word!

Knowledge of Good And Evil

Genesis 3:4-7 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the ree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

Up until this point in time Adam and Eve enjoyed the pureness of God’s presence. They lived in complete obedience with God’s boundaries. This does not mean that they were slaves to God but, as children with their parents, lived fulfilled and pleasant lives within the safety of God’s oversight.

Was there something magical in the fruit that they eat. My opinion is no. I don’t believe that it was the fruit that had some kind of powers or chemical reaction with their brains. It was the act of disobedience.

When God breathed into them they became living souls. The breath of God is what the bible refers to as the spirit of Man. Man is spirit, soul, and body. God’s Spirit communes with us through our spirit to the soul. It was at the point of disobeying that, for the first time, they made a decision from their lust of the flesh to determine what was good. She saw that the tree was good for food.

It was at the point that she determined that it was good. She became her own authority. When our decision concludes good when God has already deemed it bad, it makes God’s word seem as evil. It was disobedience. Do you see where to knowledge of good and evil come in now? In the decision to eat from the tree Eve became her own authority or elohiym, disqualifying God as her authority.

God’s name, Yawah, is never introduced until chapter 2 when He created man. Genesis 1 refers to Him as Elohiym which literally means authority. He spoke. He created. Now, in chapter 3 man attempts to be his own elohiym, his own authority. It is in this way he attempted to become like elohiym, not Yawah (verse 5).

In Genesis 5:3 Adam begot Seth in his own likeness. If Adam were still in the likeness of God then so would Seth be in the likeness of God. But, not so. Adam and Eve sinned, and produces offspring after their kind of which we are still in the likeness of Adam, inheriting the knowledge of good and evil

It is one of the hardest things to overcome in a Christian life, listening only to God’s voice and not giving in to what our flesh determines good.

The challenge: If Jesus has been asked to come into your life, let Him call the shots. Let Him speak the good into our lives and learn to know your own voice that tries to pick out what is good. It is make God the authority again.

Racist Book

picture-20I can never understand how the keepers of slavery could honestly back their practice up with scripture. While it is true that scripture does refer to slaves, slave owners, masters, and servants, it never gives approval to the practice. Rather, scripture teaches equality and is the bases by which our understanding of freedom was based upon, despite the practice at the Nation’s foundation.

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Not only is slavery not taught in scripture, neither is racism. Yet, did you know that the Book of Mormon is a racist book? If you do not believe me, take care and read the follow scriptures from their bible. Be warned, if you believe in equality it will make your blood boil:

2 Nephi 5:21 And the Lord had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.

Alma 3:6 “And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob, and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men.”

3 Nephi 2:14-15 And it came to pass that those Lamanites who had united with the Nephites were numbered among the Nephites; and their curse was taken from them, and their skin became white like unto the Nephites;

Moses 7:22 And Enoch also beheld the residue of the people which were the sons of Adam; and they were a mixture of all the seed of Adam save it was the seed of Cain, for the seed of Cain were black, and had not place among them.

Have you heard enough? I have and yet the Mormons want to claim that the Book of Mormon is as holy as the Bible. They call it “Another Gospel.”

Keep in mind that Moses was married to a black woman and Philip led a black man to Jesus. We are brothers and sisters in Christ!

Making God Like Man?

human gods?

human gods?

I am trying to be careful not to take up defense against things that really do not matter. But, I really feel that when people are trying to describe God as something that He is not it chisels away at the power and ability of God and risk making scripture not as secure as it needs to be. Let’s look at the teaching of God by the Mormons (LDS)

“God is an organized being just as we are who are now in the flesh” (Gospel Doctrine, p.64)

“The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22).

God is not omnipresent…cannot be physically present in more than one place at a time”; “If God possesses a form, that form is of necessity of definite proportions, and therefore of limited extension and space. It is impossible for Him to occupy at one time more than space of such limits” (Talmage, A Study of the Articles of Faith, p.43,48)

Brigham Young declared: “Some would have us believe that God is present everywhere. It is not so” (Journal of Discourses, vol.6, p.345).

Carfred Broderick writes: “God is a procreating personage of flesh and bone: (Dialogue: A journal of Mormon Thought, Autumn, 1967, p.100-101).

So, what is so wrong to believe that God has a physical body? First, this teaching is opposite of what the Scriptures teach us. Second, it makes Him into our image. Third, Rather than being a God of creation, space, and time, he is being made into a god of limitations.

  • John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time.
  • John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth”
  • Luke 24:39 Jesus speaking – “Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”
  • 1 Timothy 1:17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise…
  • 1 Timothy 6:16 Who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see

Now, I hesitate to do this but to show contradiction in their own bible I am including two verse from the Book of Mormon.

Alma 18:24-28 says, “And Ammon began to speak unto him with boldness, and said unto him: Believest thou that there is a God?  And he answered, and said unto him: I do not know what that meaneth.  And then Ammon said: Believest thou that there is a Great Spirit?  And he said, Yea.  And Ammon said: This is God.  And Ammon said unto him again: Believest thou that this Great Spirit, who is God, created all things which are in heaven and in the earth?”

Alma 22:9,10 says, “And the king said: Is God that Great Spirit that brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem?  And Aaron said unto him: Yea, he is that Great Spirit, and he created all things both in heaven and in earth.  Believest thou this?”

Not only does their teaching contradict scripture, but it also contradicts their own bible.

So, do not be misled. Search the scriptures. Everything must measure up to it’s truth! God is Spirit and has always existed. That is hard for us to comprehend because we measure everything by time and space. God is not contained by time and space. Jesus Himself said that “before Abraham was I am.” Outside of time.

Is not God nothing more than a superman if we believe that He is limited by time and space and has a physical body?

The Love Of A Husband

imagesGenesis 3:6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

Ok, the woman was deceived by Satan through the serpent. But how was Adam deceived, or was he. We have laughed for years and have put the blame upon the woman for tricking Adam. Do you know what Paul says about this?

1 Timothy 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived, fell into transgression.

This is one of the greatest love stories every told. Adam willingly took of the fruit so that he nor Eve would be alone. We could even say that Adam, who knew no sin, became sin for Eve. He gave up a sinless life and sinned. He gave up a Paradise created just for him. He gave it all up for the love of his wife. What other reason, if he was not deceived, could it have been? The largest trade ever made for love until Jesus. Adam chose to sin, knowing the consequences, just to be with Eve.

The last Adam, Jesus Christ, did the same for us, but with different results.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her

What greater examples do we have for husbands loving their wives?
