Don’t Get Caught Naked

imagesRevelation 3:18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.

Did you know that the High Priest and the Captain of the Guard were known as the Thief in the Night? Priestly assignments would be given to watch over the fire on the altar to make sure that it did not go out. If, by chance, the High Priest or the Captain of the Guard caught that assigned priest asleep on the job they would take a torch and light it from the fire on the altar and light the priest’s white robe. This would send the priest off running, ripping off his clothes and revealing his nakedness. Alfred Edersheim in his book, The Temple – Its Ministry and Services, gives an example of this happening.

This ties into Revelation 16:15 which says: “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

Therefore, in this context we now understand that we are to be watching the signs of the end times.

  1. Great message. I agree, we should be watching the signs. Isn’t it our final hope? We should watch, not only so we will not forget, but also so that we can tell others. But I know some people who are so caught up in watching, they refuse to plan for the future. This is I don’t agree with. We have no idea when He will come, though I wish it were soon. But that should not keep us from planning for our future, or our children’s. Don’t you agree?

  2. Agreed! It is always wise to plan – plan like you were living forever and yet live like Jesus was coming back today – looking, waiting and watching.
